As the temperatures drop and the snow shovels come out, thousands of Canadians are packing up and heading south for the winter. These beloved “snowbirds” are experts at chasing the sunshine — flocking to Florida, Arizona, California, and other sunny spots where sandals replace snow boots and golf carts outnumber snowplows.
If you’re among the lucky ones preparing to escape the chill, here’s a quick refresher on what’s required before you cross the border and set up your winter nest in the sun.
Before you hit the road (or board the plane), check your passport’s expiry date. Many countries — including the U.S. — require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date. It’s an easy detail to overlook when you’re dreaming about palm trees!
Canadians can typically spend up to 182 days (about six months) in the U.S. within a 12-month period without a visa — but there are a few details to note:
Keep track of every day you spend in the U.S., including quick trips over the border.
Staying longer than permitted could affect your residency status or even your healthcare coverage back home.
If you plan to stay longer, look into a B2 Visitor Visa extension — but apply well before your time runs out.
If you’re driving south, you’ll need proof of:
Vehicle ownership or rental agreement
Canadian insurance coverage valid in the U.S.
Current registration
And if your furry family member is joining you, don’t forget vaccination records — particularly proof of rabies vaccination for dogs. Some states can be quite strict.
Even a minor medical issue can come with a major bill in the U.S. Be sure to get travel health insurance that covers the full duration of your stay. Check for coverage on things like pre-existing conditions, prescription medications, and emergency medical evacuation (just in case).
When you arrive, declare everything — from the food in your cooler to gifts or big-ticket items. Certain foods, plants, and medications are restricted. It’s always better to ask first than face fines or delays.
Before you leave, take care of the essentials:
Arrange for mail forwarding or have a trusted neighbour collect it.
Set your thermostat to prevent frozen pipes.
Ask someone to check on your home regularly for insurance purposes.
The Canadian dollar can fluctuate — so plan ahead. Using a U.S. bank account or a cross-border credit card can save you on conversion fees and make life simpler while you’re away.
Whether you’re spending the winter in a Florida condo, an Arizona RV park, or your favourite timeshare spot, a little preparation goes a long way toward ensuring a stress-free escape.
Wherever your travels take you — stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the sunshine. ??
