Halloween Do's & Don'ts

Halloween Do's & Don'ts

Do:

  1. Plan Your Costume:
    • Do choose a costume that is appropriate for your age and the event you'll be attending.
    • Do make sure your costume is comfortable and safe to move in.  Be extremely careful wearing a mask.
  2. Decorate Safely:
    • Do decorate your home with Halloween-themed items but ensure they are fire-safe and won't obstruct pathways.
    • Do use battery powered lights in pumpkins instead of candles.
  3. Trick-or-Treat Safety:
    • Do accompany young children when trick-or-treating.
    • Do stay in well-lit areas and use reflective clothing or accessories.  Carry a flashlight.
    • Do inspect your child's candy for tampering before allowing them to eat it.  Cut up apples before eating them.
  4. Be Respectful:
    • Do respect people's property and boundaries when trick-or-treating.  Do not walk on their lawn, use walkways whenever possible.
    • Do be considerate of those who may not celebrate Halloween or who have to work and their lights are out.
    • Do avoid ringing door bells after 9:00 o'clock, your neighbours may be trying to put kids to bed.
  5. Drive Carefully:
    • Do drive cautiously, especially in residential areas on Halloween night, it will be really dark and hard to see the trick or treaters.
  6. Offer Alternative Treats:
    • Do consider offering non-food treats for children with allergies or dietary restrictions. Glow bracelets, erasers, crayons, notepads, playdough are all great alternatives.

Don't:

  1. Wear Inappropriate Costumes:
    • Don't wear costumes that are culturally insensitive or offensive.
  2. Trespass:
    • Don't enter private property without permission.
  3. Overdo It:
    • Don't consume excessive amounts of candy or alcohol.
  4. Leave Candles Unattended:
    • Don't leave lit candles unattended, especially inside pumpkins.
  5. Scare Pets:
    • Don't terrify or harm animals, including your own pets.
    • Taking your dog with you trick or treating?  It's probably best to leave them at home in a room with the tv on so they don't hear the kids coming to the door.
  6. Forget Safety:
    • Don't forget to prioritize safety, including road safety, when participating in Halloween activities.
    • If possible leave the car at home and walk your neighbourhood to collect treats.

Remember that Halloween should be a time of fun and enjoyment for everyone. By following these do's and don'ts, you can ensure a safe and respectful Halloween celebration.
